Plant Care for the Changing Season

FORMULATED is the Tortuga Forma journal about the rituals we create around the home, the objects that bring us joy, and the stories behind how things are made.

As we spot signs of early spring's arrival, it's time to pay attention to your indoor plants' changing needs. Your houseplants just went through a period of slower growth during the dormant winter months and need a new routine. For one, the days are getting longer so position your plants farther away from windows to capture indirect sunlight.

For most houseplants, direct sunlight can burn their delicate leaves.

You will need to start watering them more frequently to kickstart the plant growth cycle. Check the recommended watering schedule for your plant species, but the general rule is more regular pours in small amounts instead of heavier downpours all at once. Even if it's the rainy season outside, plants don't enjoy water logged feet.

Wait until there's no risk of frost in your region before bringing your hardiest indoor plants outside to enjoy the weather. And once they're outside, don't forget to water them when there's a shortage of rainfall.
